Freedom 55?
An associate of mine told me about his “Freedom 55” plan. He joked when I asked about this by saying “when my youngest child turns 55 then I will be free.” During these uncertain and challenging times, it’s not that far from the truth for many. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for most people to finance a 20 - 30 year retirement with even a 40 year career. For many, continuing to work past 65 is not a luxury but rather a reality. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the most productive age in human life is between 60 and 70 years of age. And the second most productive stage is from 70 to 80 years of age. Given the progress that has been made in recent years who knows what we might get up to in our 90’s! Of course, this doesn’t mean we will all be at our physical best but in terms of having an impact and doing meaningful work, 60 and older is where the action is.
There is no denying we are living longer and healthier lives. This massive demographic with an unprecedented level of talent and a drive to stay in the game, sets the stage for a transformational revolution. 65 is no longer old, with an average of 16 vital and productive years left.
Roughly 49% of baby boomers expect to, or already have extended their working lives past 70 or do not plan to retire. But our organizations and institutions have not kept up with this massive shift. Wisdom workers are flooding the employment marketplace. They are reinventing themselves. Business should not ignore them, or put them “out to pasture”. Modern society desperately needs to replant the experience, wisdom and resources of older adults into the field of tomorrow.
The number of individuals who opt to unretire will only increase in the future as boomers continue to grow dissatisfied with the traditional view of retirement.
