Statistics Canada recently shared that more than one in five adults is now “nearing” retirement. I suppose if you view retirement as the destination we have been programmed to believe it is, then using the word “nearing” might make sense. In my lifetime, I don’t recall describing myself as “nearing” grade one, high school, college, university, marriage, or parenthood or describing any of these stages as final destinations.
We seem to have inherited a life model that might have worked when life expectancy was 60 or 65, but this antiquated model was not designed for the new longer and stronger lives we are living today. It was created at a time when the notion of living well into your 90’s was unheard of. Most simply can’t work for 30 or 40 years and then live off those earnings for another 30 or 40 years. Not only is it financially impossible for many, it is also emotionally and psychologically not viable for most. And it certainly does not serve to ease the burden on our economy or health care system. In fact, it only adds to the uncertainty.
Over time and through force of habit we have systematically separated people by age and then labelled those groups creating an even greater divide. And now we find ourselves attempting to cross the lines we have been led to believe exist and learn how to work across generations. Developing opportunities for older, younger and those in the middle to mix in the circumstances of life and work has been unimaginable until now. And what an opportunity exists for those ready to change their paradigm. Let’s make the most of this multi-generational moment!
