An Innovative Recruitment Option

A growing number of people 60+ are postponing their retirement.  Plenty are launching second careers in spite of ageism rearing its ugly head.  Some are going back to school and training for their next adventure or taking up something new for the first time.  This point of life is not the beginning of the end.  It’s a new beginning to a story that has at least 20 years to unfold.  A story you can write for yourself.

History decided that 65 was some kind of magic number.  And that history has brain-washed us into believing that at that point in life you are pretty much done with work, and maybe even life itself.  The general population, media and the entertainment industry have convinced us all that shuffling off to a life of leisure and days filled with fun in the sun after all your sacrifices makes sense.  Retirement communities down south promise residents a blissful life where their “golden years” can be explored and shared with other “old folks”.  Yikes!!!

As far as I’m concerned, the definition of “old” is up for grabs and is starting to play out in the workplace where five generations find themselves together in business.  A recent study I read suggested that 69% of Baby Boomers are already working past 65 and rewiring themselves into other activities and shifting to different lines of work.  For some they want to – for many they need to.

In short order (2030 or so) 20% of people will be 65 and older with many ignoring the concept of retirement.  Today in the US 57% of all small business owners are over 50 and I would expect to find a similar pattern in our neck of the woods.  A new road map is needed.
